It’s a red car going way to fast, with a police car chasing closely behind. The chase is happening in a desert highway and none of it was using paint, but rather colored clay .
The vase is made out of a white clay, hand thrown on the wheel. At the very beginning of the process, saguaros were carved on this piece, then green clay was wedged into the carvings. When the piece got taller, the saguaros got twisted and distorted, giving it the illusion of speed. Half way through the process, the red car and the police car chasing it were also carved and wedged onto the vase using colored clays, and the final shaping of the vessel took place.
I am way too pleased with the way the clay moved and distorted the scene, making it look like a child could have drawn it.
Fully glazed and water tight, this piece stands at a bit under 9 inches tall.
